Open the black-and-white photo in the free Pictura – AI Photo Enhancer app and tap Colorize. The AI adds realistic color to skin, hair, clothing, and backgrounds in one tap — no manual painting, no desktop software.
Why colorize old photos?
Black-and-white photos keep people at a distance — color makes them feel present. Colorizing a grandparent's wedding photo or a childhood street scene turns an artifact into a moment you can relate to. It's one of the most emotionally rewarding photo edits you can make, and AI has made it a one-tap job.
How AI colorization works
A colorization model has seen millions of color photographs. From texture, shape, and context it learned that skin sits in a narrow warm range, foliage is green, denim is blue, and skies grade from horizon to zenith. When you feed it a grayscale image, it predicts the most plausible color for every region — producing natural results on faces, clothing, and landscapes.
One honest caveat: the AI predicts plausible color, not documented color. It can't know that Aunt Ana's dress was actually red — it will pick a believable color. For memories, that trade-off is almost always worth it.
How to colorize a black and white photo with Pictura
-
Get the photo onto your iPhone
Already digital? Skip ahead. Working from a print? Photograph it flat in bright, indirect window light, phone parallel to the print, avoiding glare.
-
Open it in Pictura
Download Pictura – AI Photo Enhancer free from the App Store and select the photo.
-
Restore first if it's damaged
Faded, scratched, or soft? Run Restore before colorizing — clean grayscale gives the AI a much better base. (Full details in our restoration guide.)
-
Tap Colorize
Choose Colorize in AI Tools. In a few seconds the AI paints skin tones, clothing, and background with natural color.
-
Compare, save, share
Flip between before and after, save the color version to your library, and share it with the family group chat — this one always lands.
Getting the most realistic colors
- Higher contrast in, better color out. If the source is washed out, restore or enhance first.
- Faces lead the result. Portraits colorize most convincingly; the AI is strongest on skin and hair.
- Busy scenes are fine. Streets, uniforms, and interiors all work — the AI colors region by region.
- Print it. After colorizing, upscale 4x and order a print — colorized + enlarged photos make standout gifts.
